Untitled: Sonoma County Abstraction

Untitled: Sonoma County Abstraction. Library Art Galler, November 17, 2011 through February 5, 2012. Sonoma County has a rich tradition of abstract art dating back at least to the 1950s when painters like Robert Pearson McChesney and Hassel Smith moved to the area (Petaluma and Sebastopol, respectively) and continued producing the kind of groundbreaking painting for which they had already received wide recognition. Others, like Paul Beattie and Seymour Tubis soon followed, adding their talents to the indigenous pool of painters, sculptors, printmakers, and photographers who were responsible for the county's growing reputation as a center of creativity equal to its long-standing fame for fine wine and stunning natural beauty.

Untitled: Sonoma County Abstraction presents several paintings and sculpture by some of these pioneers, along with a larger selection from their artistic heirs who continue to create a wide range of thoughtful, stimulating, and distinct abstract imagery.

This exhibit was curated by the students of the Curatorial Practices class under the guidance of Art History Professor Michael Schwager. Artists featured include Susan Adams, Alan Azhderian, Mandy Bankson, Paul Beattie, Mary Black, Obie Bowman, Chris Finley, Connie Goldman, Tim Jag, Tara Matheny-Schuster, Robert McChesney, Frances McCormack, and Seymour Tubis.
