Student Positions

Employment Information

The Library is proud to be one of the largest student employers on campus. Student assistants work on an hourly basis to support a wide range of Library services, including public services, book shelving, technology services, Automated Retrieval System (ARS) support, and various administrative duties. The Library aims to cross-train student assistants so they may work in more than one area.

Flexible work shifts are available, including evenings and weekends. Pay is dependent on experience and skill levels; in the few cases where specific and specialized skill sets are sought, such as graphic design, video editing, or foreign language proficiency, or when advanced job responsibilities are assigned, the pay rate may increase. Library student employees can work a maximum of 20 hours per week.

To work in the Library, a student must be currently enrolled at Sonoma State University. All students are encouraged to apply.

Hiring Process

The Library generally begins accepting applications for student assistants in April, when Fall registration opens; however, applications are accepted at any time and remain on file through the current academic year and summer break. Qualified candidates will be invited for an interview. Once hired, a student’s continued employment is based on successful performance evaluation and Library needs.

FAQ

  1. I filled out an application but did not hear back.
    • Because of the high volume of applications received the Library is unable to contact everyone who submits an application. The Library will contact qualified applicants directly for interviews.
  2. Can I fill out an application in case the Library hires later in the semester?
    • Yes. The Library accepts applications at all times and keeps applications on file for the entire academic year and immediate summer break.
  3. Do you only hire students who have work study? What is work study and do I have it?
    • No. The Library encourages all students to apply but does support the work study program. Work study awards are a part of a federal financial aid package. For information about Federal Work Study funds, please contact the Financial Aid Office.
