Library Services for People with Disabilities

The library will provide equal access to library resources for all currently enrolled SSU students. Patrons with disabilities wishing to identify themselves as such may request assistance at the appropriate service desk. Extensive instruction or services may require an appointment. In the case of a need for ongoing or extensive assistance with library materials, please consult Disability Services for Students for additional support, 707-664-2677 (voice); 707-664-2958 (TDD).

Building Access

Parking

  • Disabled parking spaces are available for those with current SSU parking permits in Lot C, located on the south side of the Information Center. The approach with least change in incline is the path from the west end of lot C which circles the building and reaches the first floor entrance.

Entrance

  • Both the first and second floor entrances to the Library are installed with automatic doors for disabled access.
  • Ramps lead to both of these entrances.

Restrooms

  • All restrooms are fully wheelchair accessible.
  • Refer to floor plans for locations on each floor.
  • First and second floor restrooms have door assists.

Elevators

  • Elevators to floors 1-3 are located in the north wing of the Library.
  • A second elevator serving floors 2-3 is located in the main hallway in the south wing.

Telephones

  • Wheelchair-accessible campus telephones are located on 1st, 2nd and 3rd floor north in the lobby near the main elevator. 
  • A public telephone is on the second floor, across from the Circulation Desk.
  • TTY telephones are located on the 2d floor of the Library, in the Disability Services for Students offices, and at Public Safety.

Stacks

  • All book stack areas in the Library have ADA-compliant aisle widths to accommodate wheelchairs. 
  • Library staff at any service desk can assist patrons in obtaining materials from shelves that are not accessible.

Equipment

Computer workstations

  • Computers provide convenient means of screen magnification.
  • Ask at the Reference Desk for instruction in the use of these utilities.
  • The library has a wireless network available to anyone with a laptop equipped with a wireless network card.
  • The Multimedia Department also has loaner laptops ready for wireless network use.

Magnifiers and other adaptive devices

  • The Reference Desk maintains a supply of various magnifiers and headphones for use throughout the building.

Instruction in adaptive software

  • Instruction in the use of adaptive software is available in the AsTech lab, located on the 1st floor south of the Information Center.
  • Contact the Assistive Technology Specialist, Scott Kupferman, located in the Information Technology Center, 1st floor south, at x44361, to make an appointment.

Research Assistance

Reference

  • For drop-in reference questions a reasonable accommodation is 10 minutes if other patrons are waiting. An appointment for extended assistance may be made by calling x42161.
  • Email reference is available from the Ask Us .

Instruction

  • The Library offers many drop-in workshops each week, focusing on the use of Snoopy, our library catalog and the library databases. Check the schedule posted in the lobby of the 2nd floor or on the web. The schedule is also available as a handout at the Reference Desk.
  • The Library classroom, Room 2050, is equipped with two ADA-compliant adaptive workstations.
  • Subject-specific research guides are available.

Digital Lab

  • Instruction in the use of scanning software is available--up to 10 minutes on a drop-in basis, then by appointment with the Assistive Technology Specialist, Scott Kupferman, at x42309.

Retrieving materials

Retrieving materials

Circulating materials can be requested and picked up at the Circulation Desk, (2nd floor). Service is generally available within 15 minutes, depending on current traffic.

Retrieving full text/printing

  • Instruction from the Reference Desk is available for up to 10 minutes if other patrons are waiting, then by appointment.

Photocopying

  • Up to 10 minutes assistance with photocopying of in-house materials will be provided in the following departments: Circulation; Reference; Regional.
  • Copying of reserve materials, and extensive photocopying jobs will be referred to Disability Services for Students.
  • Library staff will contact Disability Services for Students if needed.

Interlibrary Loan

  • Staff will assist in verifying holdings, and in the use of web-based ILS request forms.
